Program Head – Outdoor Education Programming
$24–$27 an hour – Part-time
Five Oaks Centre is a not for profit, Interfaith/Intercultural retreat centre seeking to curate program experiences that work towards right relations, decolonization, Interfaith understanding and growth and the work of retreat, that is the inner and outer work for the healing of the world.
Background
Five Oaks Program Heads share the vision of working together to develop program initiatives for the diverse communities which Five Oaks serves and seeks to serve, rooted in the Strategic Plan. The “Diversity in the Land and Each Other” curriculum is a foundational pillar for camp and outdoor programing; which uses biodiversity as a lens to understand human diversity; promoting land-based experiences from a decolonized perspective.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Oversight of Summer and Off-Season Acorn Day Camp
- Budget development and oversight.
- Planning and development in line with strategic plan.
- Implementation, review and development of policies and procedures which maintain high standards of camper care and program content.
- Ensure staff and campers follow health and safety rules, and all policies and procedures.
- Co-lead camp staff training with Camp Director.
- Thorough administration process and procedures, including hands on leadership.
- Market and promote Day Camp to intercultural groups and the wider community with Five Oaks staff and independently.
- Develop and Lead off season camp programing: such as PA days, Winter Break, March Break.
- Hiring and Supervision of Summer Camp Director
- Hiring of Spring and Summer staff, alongside the Camp Director.
- Support camp staff including organization of their tasks and offer feedback both informally and through written evaluations.
- Ongoing Summer support through executive decision making.
- Evaluate camping programs.
Oversight of the Diversity School Group Program
- Continued development, expansion and implementation according to an established plan.
- Budget development and oversight.
- Strategic planning and development in line with the Strategic Plan.
- Implementation, review and development of policies and procedures which maintain high standards of camper care and program content.
- Market and promote Diversity School Programming to intercultural groups and the wider community with Five Oaks staff and independently.
- Build relationships with school boards and teachers.
- Enhancement of curriculum for all ages groups and constituent groups, including an adult program.
- Explore and develop further educational opportunities for land-based learning.
Administration
- Manage Acorn Day camp Email Inbox
- Work with Hospitality, and Operations to create Camp and School Group program policies and procedures.
- Bookings Management utilizing current booking and registration software.
- Ensure all programs are adequately promoted through the Five Oaks website, Newsletters, social media, newsletters and Interfaith/Intercultural media with relevant staff.

- Comfort working outdoors, and in a wide range of tasks.
- Experience as a Director in a children’s camp setting.
- Experience leading in an outdoor environment.
- Media and promotion skills.
- Involvement in community groups and/or interfaith communities.
- Experience being in leadership position.
- Experience supervising and supporting staff
- Capacity to work positively with diverse groups and leading children and youth is a requirement.

Education and/or Experience
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in alternative education, environmental studies, outdoor education.
- Knowledge and experience of experiential and child/youth learning principles.
- Training and experience in education with all ages.
- Current First Aid and CPR or willing to complete upon hiring.
Accountability
Program Heads report to and are directly supervised by the Executive Director, and in their absence, the General Manager. Program Heads work in a team with other Program staff. The relationship between staff and the Board of Directors is founded on a basis of honesty and mutual respect. It is understood that the Program Head and management team are there to support and uphold the mission of Five Oaks Centre, and in this regard, are working together toward the same goal.
Background Check
This offer is conditional upon the results of a vulnerable sector police records search to be provided by you, which must be satisfactory to Five Oaks in its sole discretion.
Hours of Work
This position will be 20 hours per week as negotiated upon hiring. Shifts are scheduled mainly during the day between 8am am to 6pm. You will be required to work some weekends and/or holidays per month, based on business demands or as needed on-call as negotiated. Working times are flexible schedule including working overnight and weekends when required.
There is an opportunity to negotiate full-time Spring and Summer Hours with this position. It is expected that this staff will be available to support spring and summer programs regularly throughout the summer.
