August 24 - 28, 2020

Acorn Outdoor Adventure Camp

During this pandemic, it’s still important for kids to have time to learn and play outside. Five Oaks is offering a new safe and fun socially distanced day camp called Acorn Adventure Camp. Our staff is dedicated to making sure everyone at camp stays safe and healthy. Campers will experience fun games, crafts, and educational activities all while remaining six feet apart. Staff will follow government regulations for sanitization and campers will not be sharing any equipment with other campers.

Every day will feature games, crafts, and a swim in the Five Oaks pool supervised by our lifeguards. Activities will include creek study, nature science, campfires, hikes, and potentially an adventure down the Grand River. Children will love this chance to make memories running, playing, and growing in nature.

COVID-19 FAQ

Will campers still have fun in a socially distant day camp?

Absolutely! While we cannot play games like tag or basketball there are still plenty of safe fun socially distanced activities. Some of those include, a creek study, hikes, swimming, crafts, science experiments, Frisbee golf, and track and field.

Will Campers be using any unsanitary, shared, or public washrooms?

No. The only washrooms the day camp will use are the day camp washrooms and the pool washroom and change room. Each cohort of campers will have their own single stall washroom. Those washrooms will be sanitized by day camp support staff after each use. The pool washrooms will also be sanitized after each use.

How will social distancing work while swimming?

Swimming is a naturally clean process because the chlorination in the water kills germs and bacteria. We will also be ensuring that campers remain six feet apart while swimming. Our counsellors and lifeguards will facilitate fun swim activities that will keep the kids separate while having fun together. If needed campers are encouraged to bring their own life jackets. All Five Oaks life jackets and pool toys will be sanitized after each use.

What kind of screening process is in place to check for COVID-19?

When arriving on site every staff and parent/guardian (answering for their child) will be asked a series of question.

I.E. Have you or your child experienced any COVID-19 related symptoms, have you been out of the country in the last 14 days, have you or your child been in contact with anyone who may have the virus or has been tested for COVID-19 recently?

We will also be checking temperatures as staff and campers arrive on site with our touch-less thermometer.

Can a camper come for part of the week?

Unfortunately, no. We are only offering full week camp because we are carefully monitoring who the campers are exposed to while they are here at Five Oaks. Bringing a new camper in part way through the week would introduce new risk into the group.

Can siblings or friends be in the same cohort?

Yes. When you register you can request for your camper to be with a friend or sibling and we will arrange it.

Will campers be coming in close contact with other people?

No. Campers will only interact with their counsellor, the Day Camp Coordinator, and the other kids in their cohort of nine. Everyone will always remain six feet apart. If a staff needs to breach the six-foot boundary, they will sanitize their hands before and after the interaction and wear proper personal protective equipment such as a masks, gloves and/or face shield if necessary.

Will campers be sharing equipment? E.g. craft supplies, toys, sports equipment…

No. In activities like crafts and games where equipment is required each camper will have their own piece of equipment which will be sanitized after each use. Staff who are setting up or moving equipment will sanitize their hands before touching anything.

Five Oaks is housing migrant workers. Will campers encounter the workers or use the same spaces?

No. All the migrant workers on site are housed in a separate area that is clearly marked as an isolation zone. There are clear barriers in place for kids not to cross. Campers will be told and reminded about which areas they can access. The campers will be using separate bathrooms that are specifically for their Day Camp cohort of nine.

What if my child is sick prior to the start of a week of day camp?

If your child has COVID-19 like symptoms, we ask that your child stay home. If this is the case, we are happy to transfer your credit to another open week of day camp, or refund you for your week, less a $50 administrative fee.

What happens if my child becomes ill during the day at camp?

If your child feels ill during day camp, they will be brought to a designated area on site and parents or guardian will be called. If the child does have COVID-19 like symptoms, we are required to contact public health and take direction directly from Public Health for next steps.

What happens if someone comes down with COVID-19?

If someone in your child’s cohort does have COVID-19 the full week will be cancelled, and all campers and counsellors will be required to isolate for 14 days. The designated area used for this specific cohort of campers will be thoroughly disinfected by Five Oaks staff, including their designated washroom. If there are days remaining for that week, Five Oaks will refund the remaining days less a $50 administrative fee.

Where can I find more information about Five Oaks COVID-19 policies?

Our hospitality staff as well as our camp coordinator would be happy to answer any questions you may have, or send you our more detailed Five Oaks COVID-19 policies. Please feel free to call us at 519-442-3212 or email us at hospitality@fiveoaks.on.ca.
