Legacy Giving

Since 1950, when our Founder, Bev Oaten, envisioned a place to develop leaders and change lives, Five Oaks has provided a safe space to engage in transformative renewal for thousands of people each year.

For the purposes of your Will,
the Five Oaks' legal name is
"Five Oaks Christian Workers Center"

Leaving a donation to Five Oaks in your will is a lasting testimony to your generosity and will help support those who see and seek deeper meaning in life.

Five Oaks can accept gifts of cash (or cheque) and gifts of securities, as well as other vehicles such as life insurance and charitable gift annuities.

Here are some helpful tips when planning your legacy:

Talk to Your Family and Seek Expert Advice.

When considering a charitable donation through your will or any other legacy gift, we recommend you seek advice from professional advisors and discuss the matter with your family. Because Canadian tax law changes frequently, there may be tax advantages to the way you make a gift to charity in your will. For example, you may be able to leave more of your money to your friends, family and favourite charities if you give a gift of securities because of how capital gains are treated in this situation. Be sure to consult a trusted financial adviser if you’d like to maximize the tax benefits of a legacy gift.

Sample Charitable Bequest Language.

The following sample language may be helpful as you create your will. The clauses provided are standard language. If you prefer to be more specific, please contact us to ensure we can meet your wishes. Then, consult your lawyer or estate planner to help you craft a clause that meets your needs.

Charitable bequests usually have two components:
  1. the size of donation and
  2. the purpose for which the money should be used (or use of donation).
In some cases, donors are happy to have the donation used where it is most needed. In other cases, donors have a favourite program or particular area of the organization they would like to support, for example, youth programming or leadership development.
In general, there are four combinations of size and use of donation:

1. Unrestricted, specific bequest

Size of donation: A specific dollar amount of your choice
Use of donation: The organization can use it wherever it feels is most needed
If this is the kind of charitable donation you would like to make to Five Oaks, you may use this sample language in your will: I give, devise and bequeath to Five Oaks Christian Workers Center the sum of $_____________ to be used for any purpose(s) approved by the Board of Directors of Five Oaks Christian Workers Center.

2. Restricted, specific bequest, with a clause to vary

Size of donation: A specific dollar amount of your choice
Use of donation: You direct the organization to use your donation according to your wishes
If this is the kind of charitable donation you would like to make to Five Oaks, you may use this sample language in your will: I give, devise and bequeath to Five Oaks Christian Workers Center the sum of $__________ to be used for the following purpose(s):_____________________________________.
Five Oaks Christian Workers Center is unable to apply all or a part of these funds for the specific purpose(s) stated herein, the Five Oaks Christian Workers Center Board of Directors will redirect the bequest to a new purpose that matches the intent and spirit of the original gift as closely as possible.

3. Unrestricted, residual bequest

Size of donation: A percentage of the value of your estate
Use of donation: The organization can use it wherever it feels is most needed
If this is the kind of charitable donation you would like to make to Five Oaks, you may use this sample language in your will: I give, devise and bequeath to Five Oaks Christian Workers Center _______% of the residue of my estate to be used for any purpose(s) approved by the Board of Directors of Five Oaks Christian Workers Center.

4. Restricted, general (or residual) bequest

Size of donation: A percentage of the value of your estate
Use of donation: You direct the organization to use your donation according to your wishes
I give, devise and bequeath to Five Oaks Christian Workers Center _______% of the residue of my estate to be used for the following purpose(s):_____________________________________.
If Five Oaks Christian Workers Center is unable to apply all or a part of these funds for the specific purpose(s) stated herein, the Five Oaks Christian Workers Center Board of Directors will redirect the bequest to a new purpose that matches the intent and spirit of the original gift as closely as possible.
